about me

Im Britt: wife, mum and photographer. I am forever on a quest to be fitter, to encourage more, to be healthier, to laugh more, to be inspired more, to cook more, to be more positive, to love more, to see the good in others, to be content in the moment. I will probably never “get there”, but am enjoying trying:)

At the end of 2009, I decided that I wanted to learn photography for purely personal reasons. To be able to capture moments around me as my two young boys grew up. A hobby to throw myself into, an excuse to get out of the house (because us stay-at-home mums need to do that!), something outside of the day-to-day routine of normal life. What blossomed was way beyond my expectations. You see, I have a bit of history with bad birth experiences with my boys – for various reasons, and reasons I wont go into here – but the result was a desire to inform and encourage women of their choices while bringing their babies into the world. I am passionate about the birth journey. I think there is nothing more amazing than bringing a life into being. And theres little more amazing than the process, the empowerment to do so. A good friend asked me to shoot her upcoming birth in November, and while I accepted, I wasnt necessarily feeling all that inspired…I had after all, just started learning about photography. So, I started researching, hoping to gain some sort of insight into the world of birth photography. I stumbled upon a couple of sites in the US (Lyndsay Stratner’s and Lynsey Stone’s) that completely changed everything. I sat looking at these sites for a good hour, just crying and blubbering. My poor husband came home from work and didnt know what was wrong with me. It was in that hour that I knew birth photography was what I wanted to do. My passion for birth, and my new found love of photography couldnt compliment each other better. And from that night on, Ive have been pursing it – reading, learning, practising, shooting, buying new equipment (much to the delight of my poor husband).

Im still learning…I dont think I will ever be in a place that Im not…but boy, am I loving the journey! I want to capture life as it is in the moment. No fake poses or plastic smiles…I want to capture in time the moments that are genuine and unplanned, raw and unscripted. And meet some pretty amazing people along the way:)Everybody has a story, a history, a future. My job is to capture the present….

And my first birth? It was a learning experience for sure, but I was hooked from that moment on! Here is my favourite image from that day:
